British film director Michael Winner has beaten the virus that almost killed him, after a five month battle.
The 72-year-old was discharged from a London hospital last Friday almost six months after he was taken ill while celebrating Christmas in Barbados.
Winner was originally taken ill after eating an oyster in Barbados. While in hospital he contacted the MRSA super-bug.
The Death Wish film-maker is back at home and celebrating a new lease of life.
“I’ve beaten MRSA and I can speak to you as the nation’s favourite cripple! After I caught that bug from an oyster in Barbados, my leg was so badly ulcerated that I needed a skin graft. Virtually the whole of my lower left leg was rotting,” he says. “Anyway, they did a first skin graft and told me I’d need a second. It was when I went in for this second graft that doctors found I had contracted MRSA which had got in through one tiny area of my leg.
“Thankfully, the medical staff have told me it has cleared up. I only came out of hospital on Friday, but I’m getting stronger every day. I’m walking on two legs now and I fully intend doing so for some time to come!”
