He’s been a single man his entire life but finally, at the age of 75, veteran British film director Michael Winner has tied the knot.
The Death Wish filmmaker, restaurant critic and former star of the Esure TV ads wed Geraldine Lynton-Edwards, 70, at a registry office in Chelsea, south London on Monday – with actor Michael Caine among the guests.
The pair have known each other for 50 years, having first met when he was 21 and she was a 16-year-old dancer, but only got around to becoming engaged four years ago.
Winner announced his wedding via Twitter on Monday, saying: “Good morning. May not tweet much today, rather busy, getting married 1:30pm Chelsea Registry Office.”
He also admitted it felt “terrifying but rather wonderful” to finally be wed after decades as a confirmed bachelor.
“I turn 76 in October and I have never been anywhere near marriage before. It took a long time for a bit of common sense to enter my befuddled brain,” the director said recently. “I think she’s very pleased. After a while, when someone is that close to you and you love them, the question is: ‘If you love me, why aren’t we married?’”
