Britain’s deputy prime minster and leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg is has wished British Jews a happy new year.

In his personal message., Clegg said: “There is so much we can learn from the Jewish community here in the United Kingdom. A people with a rich cultural history and religious traditions spanning back hundreds of years. A people whose achievements have made such a significant contribution to all aspects of British economic, cultural and social life. And whose core values such as tikkun olam – charity, or literally ‘repairing the world’ – bring benefits which reach far beyond the Jewish community.”

Shanah tovah

A strong society is one which has strong communities.

That’s what makes our society healthier, happier, more harmonious.

But communities aren’t created by governments. Communities are bound together by values… relationships… people…

And for all of us who want to understand how we can help build strong communities, there is so much we can learn from the Jewish community here in the United Kingdom.

A people with a rich cultural history and religious traditions spanning back hundreds of years…

A people whose achievements have made such a significant contribution to all aspects of British economic, cultural and social life…

And whose core values such as tikkun olam – charity, or literally ‘repairing the world’ – bring benefits which reach far beyond the Jewish community.

For the High Holy Days, Jews from across the world – from countries as diverse as Israel… India… Ethiopia… and of course Britain – are united.

It’s a time to celebrate the year ahead with apples and honey at Rosh Hashanah… and to begin the self-reflection that culminates with Yom Kippur. People think about the changes they will make for the year ahead.

It’s inspiring… and it reminds us that – whether it’s the small daily challenges of everyday life, unrest in our local communities, or seemingly irreconcilable conflicts – we must always remain positive and hopeful.

I wish the Jewish community in Britain and across the world, shanah tovah umetukah – a happy and sweet new year – and tzom kal – an easy fast.
