Director Sam Mendes is to reunite with his American Beauty star Kevin Spacey in a three year theatre project.

Spacey, Artistic Director of London’s Old Vic Theatre, has invited Mendes to present a double-bill of classic plays up until 2010 in the British capital and the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.

In one production, Mendes will direct Stephen Millane as Hamlet in the William Shakespeare tragedy next year.

The actor, who played Agency Fox Mulder in both the cult TV series and 1998 movie, reveals X-Files creator Chris Carter and writer Frak Spotniz are busy working on a script for the new film.

The news comes after weeks of speculation surrounding Anderson’s involvement in the project.
