Klez Sisters In New York

London-based Klezmer/Cabaret duo, The Solomon Sisters are to make their New York debut by performing at Makor with a backing group featuring some of the finest Klez performers around.
The two sisters, Madeline and Penelope are influenced by old school New York Yiddish theatre and have performed across their native London.
Accompanying them on stage are musicians Jim Guttmann, David Licht, Jason Rosenblatt and Mike Winograd with joint credits including The Klezmatics and The Klezmer Conservatory Band.

The British singer upset revellers at club night G-A-Y at the Astoria on 6 January when she ran offstage mid-performance to vomit after spending the day drinking with her friend Kelly Osbourne.

Actor Zach Braff quit his job waiting tables as soon as he landed the lead role in the hit TV series Scrubs, but showed up for one last shift while intoxicated.
The 31-year-old was struggling to make ends meet as an actor in Los Angeles and came in to help the restaurant’s short-staffed manager one last time.

Actress Kate Winslet is teaming up with her Oscar-winning director husband Sam Mendes to work on a new movie.
Winslet, who has been married to the American Beauty filmmaker for three years, has been interested in playing the role of 1920s circus tiger tamer Mabel Stark since 2003.
And now Mendes’ company, Neal Street Productions, has bought the rights to adapt a fictionalised life of Stark by author Robert Hough.

Clean-living star Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle choice is a desperate attempt to beat the cancer “curse” that has gripped her family.
The Shakespeare In Love star has already lost five close family members to the disease, including her father Bruce, and fears she’s also at great risk from terminal illness.
As a result, she’s enforced a strict vegetarian diet on her young family with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, and hopes the healthy eating will ward off illness.

Supermodel Caprice Bourret has slammed reports she’s being treated in a rehab clinic in London - insisting she’s on a skiing holiday 6,000 miles away in South Africa.
A British newspaper today claimed the American model was being treated at The Priory - notorious for its string of celebrity clients - undergoing addiction therapy and counselling for depression.
Another paper even claimed she is on suicide watch after taking a suspected overdose.

Richard Desmond, owner of Express newspapers as well as magazines including OK! and Happy looks set to float his adult entertainment TV channels on the London Stock market.
According to reports, the floatation of holding company Portland TV could be worth more than £200m.
Among the more than 20 channels operated by Portland are Television X, Gay TV and Red Hot Channel.

Jazz songstess Amy Winehouse says has left her party-loving days behind and is now clean and sober.
The wild-haired star who recently won Best Female Singer at The Brits says she’s calmed down and enjoys nothing more than having a quite night out with her friends.
“I’m over that stuff now,” she says. “I have so little time with my friends these days that when I do get a chance to go out with them I don’t want to get so out of my pram that I can’t remember it the next day.”

Israeli filmmaker Joseph Cedar has scooped the best Director award at the annual Berlin Film Festival.
The New York-born director who moved to Israel when he was six won for Beaufort which is based on Israeli author Ron Leshem’s book If There Is A Heaven about Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon after 18 years of occupation and follows the lives of a group of soldiers.
Cedar himself served in Lebanon during the late 1980s.

Counting Crows lead singer Adam Duritz has started his own record label.
The 42-year-old rocker had no plans to set up his own company until he came across two artists on social networking website MySpace that he wanted to sign.
Duritz discovered Chicago, Illinois-based punk-pop band Blacktop Mourning and a New York City rapper known as Notar and decided to start his own label.

Hollywood star Michael Douglas is encouraging cultural exchange among kids by lending his support to a new technology-based project.
The 62-year-old has joined forced with Global Nomads Group, which aims to improve communications for young people around the world.
He hopes funding for initiatives like video-conferencing will improve international links, after a successful trial in 2003 with US and Iraqi students.

Amy Winehouse’s father has dismissed speculation the British singer is an alcoholic because she doesn’t drink every day.
The hard-drinking Rehab star, who took her parents to the Brit Awards ceremony in London on Wednesday, recently revealed that scars on her arm were the result of a drunken fall in New York.
Comedian-turned-radio host Al Franken has officially announced he will seek the Democratic nomination to run for the US Senate seat now held by Minnesota Republican Norm Coleman.
The 55-year-old former Saturday Night Live star and political commentator, made the announcement in a post on his website.
He wrote: “I’m not a typical politician (but) nothing means more to me than making government work better for the working families of this state.”

The 54-year-old trained as an actor before finding his way into porn. He has branched from the genre on occasion, making a cut appearance in 1998 film Ronin, but feels he has more to offer Hollywood.

North London jazz songstress Amy Winehouse has taken one of the top prizes at the prestigious Brit Awards.
The 23-year-old, who has rarely been out of the spotlight over the past six months with her much-publicised drinking binges, beat a string of other hopefuls to win Best British Female.
Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley announced to the Earls Court crowd that Winehouse had won. A semi-shocked Winehouse got on stage and thanked the crowd and her fans, as well as her family.
