Jewish Talent Leads The Way At Theatre Awards

Shows by Tom Stoppard and Tony Kushner were among the big winners at the 2007 Critics Circle Awards, which took place at London’s Prince Of Wales Theatre.
Veteran playwright Stoppard won the Best Play award for his latest work, Rock ‘n’ Roll, which is set in Communist Prague. Its star Rufus Sewell was also named Best Actor.
Kushner’s musical Caroline, Or Change, about a Jewish family in America’s South in the 1960s, picked up The Peter Hepple Award For Best Musical, named after the former editor of theatre magazine The Stage.
Manhattan-born Kushner did not attend the ceremony, but he said in a speech read by the National Theatre’s Executive Director Nick Starr that winning was “a great honour for us. It’s hugely helpful, and hugely encouraging.”
Stoppard was also absent from the awards, but director Trevor Nunn accepted the prize on his behalf.
