Troubled pop star Amy Winehouse and celebrity footballer David Beckham have achieved new public recognition - Winehouse has been voted Britain’s worst female accent, while Beckham becomes Britain’s worst male accent.
The Jewish stars talking voices’ are said to be a major turn off in the celebrity stakes with the Geordie accent and Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole topping the best female voice and TV stars Ant and Dec topping the best male voice.
The poll for budget hotel chain Travelodge revealed how people are fed up with accents they can’t understand. As a result of its findings, Travelodge will be giving out a free guide to understanding regional accents and words.
“It seems we have something of a national communication problem on our hands, as many Brits simply don’t understand some of the UK’s most loved regional dialects,” said Travelodge head of communications Greg Dawson. “With our Lingo Busting Guides, we hope to help Brits converse more easily with locals when they stay in our hotels, helping them to fully absorb the distinct regional cultures that the UK has to offer.”
