Rubin Takes On Potts

Music mogul Rick Rubin is set to work with British talent show winner Paul Potts - in an effort to launch his singing career in the U.S.

Opera star Potts was crowned the winner of Britain’s Got Talent earlier this year and has since enjoyed considerable success in the UK with his debut album One Chance entering the charts at number one.

And now Rubin, who is best known for his work with the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and Slayer, is keen to show the Americans what they are missing out on.

“I can’t look at his performance without crying. His voice is so beautiful. It totally blew my mind,” he says. “In England, Paul Potts is already gigantic, but we are going to launch him in America. It’s the element of surprise that makes you interested in Paul - he looks so bland and then he sings so well.”

I remember when people were wondering what gave the son of a baker and a factory worker the right to sing opera. He had no background for it. He can’t even read music!

With a voice all his own, he gave grown men chills and brought tears to their eyes.

    Pavarotti is Pavarotti.

Some fifteen years ago, many people said that being blind was a gimmic. He had no real talent, after all. Some still wonder why he sings anything at all.

With a voice all his own, he gives grown men chills and brings tears to their eyes.

    Bocelli is Bocelli

    In the same manner…

Who does this cellphone salesman think he is, anyway? He’s nobody special, after all. Why, just look at him! Listen to him! He has no technical skills at all!

With a voice all his own, he gives grown men chills and brings tears to their eyes.

    Potts is Potts.

There is no comparison. Each Talent brings, and brought, something unique, something beautiful, something wonderful, to the world.

To compare one to the other is a game for fools. To attempt to dismiss such Talent can only be done by those fools who are imprisoned within the confines of their own world-weary ennui.

The world-weary fools have always been wrong.

Each Talent will be remembered - and each will be celebrated - in his own right. There is no comparison. There is no critic who can touch them.

Paul. Ignore the critics. Forget the comparisons.

Bring tears to my eyes. Send chills down my spine.

    Sing!!!
