The BBC is to introduce a nightly news bulletin at 8pm on BBC One in an attempt to appeal to younger viewers with Natasha Kaplinsky as a front-runner to present it.
The 60 to 90 second bulletin is set to begin in the autumn and will fill a gap between the Six and 10 O’Clock news.
“From six o’clock to 10 o’clock is rather a long time not to tell the viewers of BBC One what’s going on in the news,” said Channel controller Peter Fincham. “It will appeal to the younger audience, but I don’t want to obsess about that.”
In trials of the news service in the Midlands, BBC star Kaplinsky took part, though the BBC has yet to confirm if she will be the main presenter of it.
