Jewish comedians Simon Amstell and Mark Maier are among those taking part in a charity event next month to mark the second anniversary of the London bombings on July 7 2005.
Mim’s Comedy Night, at London’s Comedy Store, will be held on July 9, and honour the memory of Miriam Hyman a 32-year-old victim of the bombings.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Miriam Hyman Memorial Fund which supports the work of charity Orbis to eliminate avoidable blindness globally
Miriam’s sister Esther Hyman told Something Jewish that the idea for the evening came about after friends held a fundraising get-together in her memory.
“On Mim’s birthday in 2006, her friends organised a gathering at The Hill, a pub in Hampstead,” she explained, “and Jon Culshaw kindly did a turn.”
“At that event over £1500 was raised for the Miriam Hyman Memorial Fund, and it gave us the idea that a comedy night on a larger scale would be a popular event. Although one or two of the comedians were personal contacts, we approached the others cold, and they were obviously moved enough to offer their time on 9th July.”
Over 300 of the 400 available £20 tickets have been sold for the event and organisers expect it to be a sell-out.
Esther says her sister would have appreciated the evening.
“Mim herself organised a fund-raising event at the Comedy Store for the International Myeloma Foundation,” she said.
“She was a fun-loving person who loved to laugh. More than that she was a generous soul who took pleasure in other people’s enjoyment, so Mim’s Comedy Night could not be a more appropriate way to remember Mim, at the time of the second anniversary of the London bombings.”
