Rantzen Puts On Best Frock For Palace Date With Prince Charles

Veteran TV presenter and children’s rights campaigner Esther Rantzen has collected her CBE from Buckingham Palace.
Rantzen, 66, who recently fronted the TV show Old Dogs New Tricks with fellow consumer rights campaigner Lynn Faulds Wood, was recognised by the Queen for services to young people.
She received her award from the Prince Of Wales, and described it as “a tremendous honour”.
“Obviously there’s a huge army of people who have provided services to children,” Rantzen said.
Childline, the 24-hour helpline which aims to help young people facing danger or difficulty who need to talk to someone, was set up by Rantzen in 1986. It now receives more than 4,500 calls each day and recently ran a campaign for funding.
“We’ve got to the stage where we can answer every child,” Rantzen said. “If a child is desperate to reach us, our nightmare is that they might not try again.”
Rantzen became a household name as presenter of the long-running TV consumer show That’s Life, which ran for 21 years. She married documentary maker Desmond Wilcox in 1977 – Wilcox, who died in 2000, converted to Judaism.
