Kirk DouglasMovie veteran Kirk Douglas admits to playing the “movie star card” in an attempt to meet the “right people”, including former Yugoslavian president Josip Tito.

The Spartacus actor, 90, even beat the British Ambassador to meet the president during a trip to the country - now named Serbia and Montenegro.

“I was in Yugoslavia and I wanted to meet President Tito,” he reveals. “I went to the British Embassy and the Ambassador said, ‘My boy, I’ve been here for six weeks and have yet to see Tito. You don’t stand a chance.’

Douglas added: “The next morning Tito sent his private plane to take me to Lubianato meet him. Turns out he’s a big movie buff. When I came back the British Ambassador came over to me and said outraged, ‘How did this happen?’ I said, ‘Mr Ambassador how many movies have you made?’”
