Two British-born Jews, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen and philanthropy co-ordinator Roger Bennett have been rated among the 50 most influential Jews living in America according to Jewish newspaper The Forward.
35-year-old Baron Cohen, who made a name for himself as wannabe gangster rapper Ali G from Staines and more recently Kazakhstan TV reporter Borat is highly rated by The Forward. It says: “With his newest smash hit, he’s ratcheted things up a level, opening a national dialogue on prejudice. And early reports suggest that he’s now considered the funniest Jew in America.”
Liverpool-born Bennett has been based in New York for a number of years and has worked for billionaire Charles Bronfman, by co-ordinating a number of projects that Bronfman has donated millions of dollars to. In his spare time, Bennett, 36, co-authored Barmitzvah Disco a collection of photos and stories from people who celebrated their bar and bat mitzvahs.
Other Jews making it to the list include Barbra Streisand, TV presenter Jon Stewart, actress Scarlett Johansson and actor Jeremy Piven.
