Celebrated American playwright and screenwriter Israel Horovitz who has written more than 50 plays is to launch a new theatre company in New York in February next year as well as see a number of new productions of his work go on stage.
Horovitz, 67, is the father of Beastie Boy Adam “Adrock” Horovitz and whose autobiographical film Author!Author! starring Al Pacino looked at the life of a broadway author and his family.
Everything starts on December 13 at the Theatre Row’s Kirk Theatre in New York with Lebensraum. With a cast of just three actors, over 80 characters are featured in this tale of a German Chancellor inviting six million Jews to relocate back to Germany and how the characters interact with their new homeland after the terrible events of World War II.
The production notes reveal: “Lebensraum follows an out of work Jewish dock-worker from Massachusetts to Bremerhaven, an Auschwitz survivor who returns to Berlin to find the woman who betrayed his family to the Nazis, a young German girl who falls in love with a teenaged Jewish American “new citizen”, and scores of others.”
In January, Israel Horovitz’s New Shorts will open offering nine new plays at the 78th Street Theatre Lab.
Then in February, The off-shoot of his New York Playrights Lab, which was founded in 1975 will see its first production The Secret of Mme. Bonnard’s Bath at Theatre Row Theatre.
What a busy boy!
