American Opera star Beverly Sills has died. The 78-year-old born Belle Miriam Silverman to a Romanian father and Russian mother in Brooklyn was suffering from cancer.
According to the New York Times, Sills’ mother considered her to be the “Jewish Shirley Temple” and entered showbiz at the age of four.
She performed with the New York City Opera and become its general director following her stage retirement at the age of 50.
In recent years Sills was active in supporting and raising funds for the arts. In 1994 she became chair of New York’s Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts.
