Olivia Newton John is suing record label Universal Music Group, claiming she is owed more than $1 million in royalties from sales of the soundtrack from her hit movie Grease.
The 58-year-old Australian star – who played Sandy Olsson opposite John Travolta’s Danny Zuko in the 1978 film – has received some money from the album, but alleges Universal have failed to make a number of contractual payments to her, after the deal was re-negotiated in 1979, 1980 and 2000, to incorporate cassettes and compact discs.
Newton-John, the granddaughter of noted German Nobel prize-winning physicist Max Born also says she wasn’t compensated for the use of her image on the album cover.
Universal has dismissed the lawsuit as “without merit”, adding, “We expect that the court will dismiss it.”
