Calder Tops Music Rich List

ZombaRecord company mogul Clive Calder has emerged as Britain’s only music billionaire according to the annual Sunday Times Rich List.

Worth an estimated £1.3bn, South African-born Calder, 61 founded Zomba, home to a range of artists including Britney Spears, Will Smith, Billy Ocean and Backstreet Boys.

A British-citizen, the Jewish billionaire has been dubbed the Howard Hughes of the music industry as he guards his privacy and according to reports, has only ever done one interview.

Calder, was raised in Johannesburg and played in various bands as a teenager and moved to Britain in the 1970s where he first set up Zomba as a book publishing company before becoming a record label.

By the mid-90s, Zomba was the largest independent music label and Calder become a multi-millionaire selling stakes of the music and recording business to German record company Bertelsmann.  In 2002, he sold the rest of the company to Bertelsmann for £2bn.

Calder’s main home is in the Cayman Islands and he also maintains properties in London and New York.
