Young FrankensteinMel Brooks’ classic parody on Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein is to make it to New York’s Broadway for a 2007 Halloween opening night which will star original big screen actress Cloris Leachman reprising her role for the stage.

In the 1974 version, Leachman, now 80, starred as Frau Blucher alongside Gene Wilder who appeared in the lead role.

For the Broadway version, Leachman will be the only original cast to appear.

According to the New York Post, a special actors reading of the musical was given earlier this week to selected theatre people.

Playing the lead of Frankenstein in the reading was Brian D’Arcy James, Igor was Roger Bart, Inga was Sutton Foster and the monster was played by Shuler Hensley.

Among the new songs are Kurt Weill inspired My Boyfriend! sung by Frau Blucher.

Film showstopper Puttin’ on the Ritz always plays a key part in the musical.

In a leaked email, Susan Stroman, who directed The Producers said: “We were delighted with yesterday’s reading. The company had a mere 29 hours to prepare an entire show, and they did it brilliantly.”
