Having made fun of everything from rock musicians in This Is Spinal Tap, to dog owners in Best In Show, director Christopher Guest has turned his attentions to the film industry for his latest big screen production For Your Consideration.
Written by Guest and American Pie’s Eugene Levy, the film focuses on the production of low-budget movie Home For Purim, a drama set in the 1940s in which the Pischers, a Jewish family from America’s Deep South gather at their dying mother’s bedside on the occasion of her favourite festival.
When Internet rumours begin to suggest that the film and its stars may well be Oscar contenders, both cast and crew find themselves in a state of high excitement, which grows after the presenters of a top-rated entertainment programme also begin to champion the movie.
However, as the awards buzz continues, the chief of production studio Sunfish Classics gets involved, and suddenly Home For Purim becomes a very different movie, much to the horror of its writers.
Many of the stars of Guest’s previous movies are once again starring here, with a cast led by Catherine O’Hara, Harry Shearer, Eugene Levy and Parker Posey.
British actor Ricky Gervais also turns up as the president of Sunfish Classics, who insists that the filmmakers should “tone down the Jewishness”. Guest also appears as director Jay Berman, who is making his movie debut with Home For Purim.
An enjoyable romp from Guest which combines his great directing style alongside a great script co-written with Levy.
Even more laughs can be found on the For Your Consideration website as it contains, a website for Home For Purim as well.
A well thought out project that is destined to be a classic.
