Israeli filmmaker Joseph Cedar has scooped the best Director award at the annual Berlin Film Festival.
The New York-born director who moved to Israel when he was six won for Beaufort which is based on Israeli author Ron Leshem’s book If There Is A Heaven about Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon after 18 years of occupation and follows the lives of a group of soldiers.
Cedar himself served in Lebanon during the late 1980s.
“It’s obvious we’re against war and it’s horrible,” said 38-year-old Cedar. “Hopefully this film will give insight into the specific nature of how absurd combat and war is.”
Meanwhile, Argentinean actor Julio Chavez, the son of an Holocaust survivor, won the best actor award for his role El Otro.
