Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer is set to play the role of Superman’s birth mother in the upcoming blockbuster movie Man Of Steel.
The 42-year-old – who until now has been relatively unknown outside of her home country – stepped in after actress Julia Ormond, who was originally cast, pulled out for unknown reasons.
She will star as Lara Lor-Van in the film, opposite Oscar-winner Russell Crowe who is playing Superman’s dad Jor-El, and British actor Henry Cavill, who stars as the superhero himself.
Ayelet told Ynet News that she was “happy and excited” to be joining the film, although added: “I can’t elaborate about the role I’ll be playing.”
The Tel Aviv born actress has made a name for herself in Israel starring in a string of homegrown TV shows as well as playing the title role in the 2004 comedy drama Nina’s Tragedies.
More recently she has added several Hollywood movies to her CV, including roles in the Steven Spielberg thriller Munich, and The Da Vinci Code sequel Angels And Demons, which starred Tom Hanks.
Man Of Steel, which also stars Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, is due for release in summer 2013
