Hoffman Thanks Wife For Quirk In Role

Published on November 22, 2007 with No Comments

Dustin Hoffman perfected his role as a 243-year-old toy shop proprietor in Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium after his wife reminded him of an ‘ostrich-routine’ the actor performs.

The Rain Man star was struggling to develop his character’s quirks until his wife urged him to put his party trick on the big screen

He explains: “She was reading the script and she turned to me and said, ‘Do you remember the ostrich joke?’ Of course I did because it’s one of my favourite jokes, one of my mainstays.”

Hoffman added: “Then Lisa (my wife) said, ‘Have you ever looked in the mirror when you tell that joke?’ I never had, actually. So, at her suggestion, I stood in front of the mirror, told the joke and realised exactly what Lisa was getting at. Lo and behold, Mr. Magorium was looking back at me in that mirror.”
