Funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen has scooped a prestigious Golden Globe award for his Kazakh TV reporter Borat.
The former Habonim youth club member gained recognition by winning Best Actor In A Comedy Or Musical at the glittering event, which also saw him bring the house down with his acceptance speech.
35-year-old Baron Cohen paid tribute to his co-star Ken Davitian, and spoke of their naked bedroom wrestling scene.
“This movie was a life-changing experience. I saw some amazing, beautiful, invigorating parts of America but I saw some dark parts of America, an ugly side of America, a side of America that rarely sees the light of day,” he said.
Then, he shocked the crowd, which included Will Smith, Martin Scorsese and Jack Nicholson, by further revealing, “I refer of course to the anus and testicles of my co-star Ken Davitian.”
Speaking of Davitian, Baron Cohen quipped, “Ken, when I was in that scene and I stared down and saw your two wrinkled golden globes on my chin, I thought to myself, `I’d better win a bloody award for this.”
To continued applause from the crowd, Baron Cohen proceeded, “And then, when my 300 pound co-star decided to sit on my face and squeeze the oxygen from my lungs, I was faced with a choice – death or to breathe in the air that had been trapped in a small pocket between his buttocks for 30 years. Kenneth, if it was not for that rancid bubble, I would not be here today.”
The awards, which took place at the swanky Beverly Hilton Hotel in Hollywood, are seen as an indicator of who might get an Oscar nomination later this month. Baron Cohen is tipped for a Best Actor nomination following his Golden Globes victory.
