Funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen is tipped to triumph at next year’s Golden Globe awards.
The event, which hands out gongs for the best in TV and film over the past 12 months, is voted for by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and is seen as an indication of who might get lucky at the even more prestigious Oscars, which are held in February.
Baron Cohen is tipped as one of the favourites to receive a nomination for Best Comedy Actor, for his role as Kazakhstan TV journalist Borat, while the movie itself is among the favourites to be nominated for Best Musical Or Comedy Film. Those lucky enough to have been nominated will be announced on December 14.
“Sacha Baron Cohen’s name is on the lips of everyone in Hollywood,” said one British hack working in Tinseltown. “You can’t discount the amount of work he has done to achieve the enormous success that the Borat movie has given him. People like to recognise success not just in making the film but in actually slogging your guts out promoting it as well.”
However, Borat is likely to face some stiff competition in the comedy categories, most notably from Christopher Guest’s film For Your Consideration, which follows the Oscar campaign of a low-budget Jewish-themed movie, Home For Purim.
The star-studded ceremony will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in swanky Beverly Hills on January 15 2007.
