With a diverse cultural background of Jewish mother and black father, US-based Peter Harper celebrates his heritage through his artwork.
The brother of musician Ben Harper, 33-year-old Peter Harper’s work has been snapped up by some of Hollywood’s top stars including Danny Devito and Meg Ryan.
His mother and grandparents opened the Folk Music Center in Claremont, California which has become not just a store but also museum and education resource for anyone interested in folk.
When it comes to work, Harper uses a number of materials including bronze, wax and clay.
His African inspirations come from time spent in Zimbabwe. “I went to live in Zimbabwe for a year long study abroad program. An experience that permanently changed my life,” he says.
He added: “I told them I like to make art so they suggested I try and gain admission to Muzalikazi’s Arts and Craft school in Bulawayo. I was admitted, and it was there I was given the foundation not only for figurative sculpture and tribal sculpture, but also the foundation for the tools that allowed me to create a fusion between traditional American folk art, American fine art, and African tribal art.”
