    Yiddish Twist Orchestra return to their East End roots

    Fans of Jewish music are in for a treat this winter as allstar group The Yiddish Twist Orchestra take to the stage at a new arts festival in London’s East End.

    The band – who blend traditional Jewish klezmer music with ska-inspired beats, inspired by Jewish bandleader Willy Bergman – will be one of the main performers at the Platforma Festival, an event dedicated to celebrating arts created by and about refugees.

    Kiss rocker Gene Simmons has finally married his long-term girlfriend, actress Shannon Tweed, in a ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

    The couple – who have been together for 28 years and have two children, Nick and Sophie – finally announced their engagement last month, and were wed in front of 400 guests, with the nuptials filmed for Gene’s reality show Gene Simmons Family Jewels. His publicist Dawn Miller later offered her “congratulations to the new married couple” on her Facebook page.

    Singer-songwriter Lucie Silvas and 10cc’s Graham Gouldman are among those musicians featured on a new compilation album in aid of the Samaritans.

    Songs to Save A Life, which will be available for download from October 3, features cover versions from other singers as well as contributions from other British acts including Sophie Ellis-Bextor, James Morrison and retro boy band The Overtones.

    Mix the pounding, hip-swaying drums of Afro-Cuban jazz with lilting Jewish tunes from mid-1900s New York, and what do you get? Jewish Latin jazz.

    At a performance at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in San Francisco, the rhythm of the opening song was very Latin-actually, a Cuban-Colombian pachanga. But with a twist.

    The language was not Spanish. It was Yiddish. The song was from the New York Jewish theater around 1928.
