Daniel FinkelsteinThe Times associate editor Daniel Finkelstein has won £3,000 by being named winner of the inaugural Chaim Bermant Prize which aims to recognise the best in journalism covering Jewish and Israeli themes.

The prize was established by the Jewish Book Council and the Jewish Chronicle in memory of Bermant who wrote a weekly column for the newspaper for nearly 40 years until his death in 1998.

Finkelstein himself, is a monthly Jewish Chronicle columnist and in a statement, the judges of the prize said the connection had “no bearing” on their decision.

According to the organisers, around 20 people submitted entries and Finkelstein “reflected the values, spirit and qualities of Chaim Bermant’s journalism”.

A delighted Finkelstein said: “I was delighted that the judges detected some of his spirit in my work – his erudition and wit were justly celebrated.”
